The morning air in the Seireitei carried the scent of wisteria and spiritual pressure, a combination Mayuri Kurotsuchi had long since grown accustomed to, though never particularly fond of. Beauty without function was simply wasted reishi.

He sat in his laboratory, the vast underground complex that served as both his domain and his sanctuary, surrounded by monitoring equipment that hummed with data from across Soul Society. Screens flickered with biological readouts, spiritual measurements, surveillance feeds, the heartbeat of his empire of knowledge.

"Mayuri-sama," Nemu's voice cracked from the intercom, flat. "The weekly personnel applications have been compiled. Forwarding to your terminal now."

"Hn." Mayuri didn't look up from the cellular degradation analysis before him, his painted fingers manipulating holographic data with practiced precision. Personnel matters were tedious. The 12th Division didn't exactly attract talent, most shinigami found his methods "questionable" or "deeply disturbing" or whatever other hand-wringing complaint was fashionable this week.

Still, he'd learned centuries ago that even tedium must be attended to. One never knew when something interesting might surface.

He flicked his wrist, dismissing the cellular data and pulling up the application queue. His golden eyes scanned through the usual drivel. Inadequate spiritual pressure. Mediocre academy scores. Laughably irrelevant skill sets.

Delete. Delete. Delete.

Then he paused.

The name meant nothing to him. He'd never bothered to give #9 one, after all. But the spiritual signature embedded in the application file? That made his pupils dilate with recognition.

A slow, theatrical smile spread across his painted features.

"Oya oya..." His voice carried the dangerous sweetness of a predator spotting prey. "Nani kore? [What's this?]"

Twenty-three years. Twenty-three years, four months, and sixteen days since he'd released her into the seventy-eighth district of Rukongai. No memories. No advantages. A blank slate with extraordinary spiritual architecture, sent into the world to develop naturally, to see if a Nemuri-class artificial soul could achieve true autonomy without his direct intervention.

The surveillance had never stopped, of course. Discreet monitoring devices, periodic spiritual pressure scans, carefully placed informants. He'd watched her survive, adapt, grow. Observed as she manifested abilities that made the Shin'ō Academy recruiters circle like carrion birds around something they couldn't quite understand.

She'd graduated. Not at the top, no that would have been too obvious, but respectably. And now.

Mayuri leaned back in his chair, reading the application with mounting satisfaction.

"Requesting assignment to the 12th Division, Department of Research and Development. Proposed position: Botanical Cultivation Specialist for the Spirit Herb Garden and Pharmaceutical Agriculture Wing."

"Omoshiroi." [Interesting...] He drew out the word like savoring fine sake.

How delightfully appropriate. The spirit herb gardens, where experimental plants infused with various spiritual compounds were cultivated for pharmaceutical research. A position that would keep her close, that would allow him to observe, that would put his greatest creation directly within his sphere of influence without raising suspicion.

She didn't know, of course. #9 had no idea she was the culmination of the Nemuri Project, wandering home like a salmon returning to spawn.

"Mayuri-sama?" Nemu's voice again. "Do you require the standard background checks on the applicants?"

"Hitsuyo nai." [No need.] Mayuri's smile widened, taking on an edge that would have concerned anyone familiar with that particular expression. "In fact, I'll be conducting the interview for this one personally."

His fingers drummed against the armrest, black nails against painted white skin, a staccato rhythm of anticipation.

The Nemuri Project's #6 had been a failure, too unstable. #7, his dear Nemu, was nearly perfect, but still required his constant guidance, his direct orders. She was magnificent, but she was ultimately his. An extension of himself rather than a truly independent being. #8, nobody talked about #8.

But #9... #9 had developed alone. Had survived. Had thrived without his hand guiding every step. Had returned to him of her own volition, through her own choices, however unconscious the pull might be.

"Mattaku." [Good grief.] He shook his head with theatrical wonder. "To think she'd return on her own. Subarashii." [Magnificent.]

"Send her an acceptance notice," he said, unable to keep the theatrical satisfaction from his voice. "Tell her to report to Laboratory Seven tomorrow at precisely 0800 hours. Wakarimashita ka?" [Understood?]

"Hai, Mayuri-sama." [Yes, Mayuri-sama.]

"And prepare observation equipment. Full biometric scanning capabilities, but subtle. I want every detail of her spiritual pressure, her cellular composition, her neural patterns. This is going to be fascinating."

He closed the application file and pulled up his surveillance archives on #9—twenty-three years of data compiled into neat, organized folders. His greatest experiment was about to enter its next phase.
